Day 1- March 13, 2025 -Halifax Family Gathering
Our family reunion in Halifax was filled with meaningful connections, shared experiences, and plenty of memorable moments. It all began with a scenic drive from Woodstock, NB, to Halifax, NS. With my son riding along, the journey was marked by good weather, engaging conversations, and laughter—a perfect setup for what was to come. Once in Halifax, we reunited with my second son, who flew in from Newfoundland. Meeting him at the airport felt like the final piece of the puzzle, signaling the start of our long-anticipated family gathering.
For our stay, we had booked a charming Airbnb on Robie Street, conveniently close to Halifax’s lively downtown area. It served as a cozy retreat amidst our busy schedule, providing both comfort and proximity to all our planned activities.
The highlight of our first evening was dinner at Ristorante Amano, an exceptional Italian eatery known for its authentic flavors and inviting atmosphere. The restaurant, located at Bishop’s Landing, brings a true taste of Italy to Halifax. Starting with a bottle of Nippozano Chianti, the evening only got better as we indulged in beautifully crafted dishes. The Gamberi In Padella—a shrimp dish wrapped in pancetta—was a delightful beginning, perfectly complemented by a light cream sauce. The main course, Veal Scallopine, was rich and indulgent, featuring a tender cut of veal and a flavorful mushroom-based cream sauce. Dessert brought an Affogato that balanced the sweetness of creamy ice cream with the boldness of freshly brewed coffee—a simple yet elegant conclusion to the meal. Dining there not only filled our bellies but also set a celebratory tone as we caught up with friends who joined us for the evening.
Later that night, my sons attended the Collective Soul concert at the Scotiabank Centre. The iconic rock band, celebrating their 30th Anniversary Tour, delivered a dynamic and electrifying performance. Known for their chart-topping hits like Shine, December, and The World I Know, Collective Soul engaged the crowd with both nostalgic classics and a few surprises, including a rousing cover of AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. The energy of the live music and the enthusiastic audience made it a night to remember, adding a vibrant flourish to the end of our first day in Halifax.

Day 2 – March 14, 2025- A Blend of Errands, Indulgence, and Exploration
The day began with a practical errand—getting the car serviced. Once that was out of the way, we treated ourselves to a morning stop at a cozy café on Robie. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee was irresistible, and the rich, velvety taste perfectly complemented the buttery, flaky croissants. Simple yet satisfying, it was a great start to the day.
After breakfast, we made our way to IKEA on the Dartmouth side. A trip to IKEA is never just about shopping—it’s an experience, a mix of inspiration and discovery. From unique décor pieces to clever storage solutions, we wandered through the aisles, finding both practical and surprising treasures.
By mid-afternoon, hunger called again, and we headed to Los Toros, a Spanish restaurant and wine bar, for a meal with our sons. Los Toros delivered a dining experience rich in flavor and culture. We began with a Charcuteria Variada, a delicious assortment of Spanish cured meats, cheeses like tangy manchego, briny olives, and sweet figs. The warm pita bread stole the show—its crispy exterior and soft interior elevated every bite. To accompany the meal, we enjoyed glasses of El Picoleo Red, a Spanish wine with deep berry notes and a hint of spice that paired beautifully with the flavors of the charcuterie board. The friendly service and warm ambiance made the experience all the more special—a perfect opportunity to connect with our sons over great food.
After the meal, our sons headed off to reconnect with childhood friends for an evening gathering. Meanwhile, we strolled through downtown Halifax at a relaxed pace. Wandering the streets lined with historic charm and modern energy, we soaked in the fresh ocean breeze and the unhurried rhythm of the city.
Later in the evening, we joined close friends for dinner at Waterpolo, a stunning seafood restaurant along Halifax’s vibrant waterfront. The ambiance was an ode to elegance, inspired by the sleek, nautical design of handcrafted boats, complemented by dynamic waterfront views. The meal began with six freshly shucked oysters, served with delightful accompaniments like French 75 mignonette and house-made hot sauce. Each oyster was briny and fresh, a perfect start.
The Colossal Shrimp Cocktail followed—succulent shrimp paired with vibrant cocktail sauce and a tangy mustard aioli that added a surprising depth to the dish. For the main course, the poached halibut stood out as the star. Tender and delicate, it was beautifully paired with yuzu kosho beurre blanc, dill oil, buttered green beans, toasted almonds, baby potatoes, and a touch of salmon caviar for a hint of indulgence.
The meal ended on a high note with the Baked Hawaii, a whimsical dessert that blended tropical flavors of yuzu and coconut gelato, angel sponge cake, and mango compote, topped with perfectly torched Swiss meringue. Each element balanced citrus brightness and creamy richness, leaving us with an unforgettable finale.
Waterpolo’s impeccable service, thoughtful wine pairings, and dedication to showcasing Nova Scotia’s seafood offerings made for a truly exceptional evening.
As the day came to a close, there was a sense of fulfillment—not just from the meals enjoyed or the items found, but from the seamless blend of experiences. The joy of discovering new places, the ease of familiar traditions, and the quiet magic of a day well spent.
Day 3: March 15, 2025 – Nostalgia, Waves, and New Perspectives
The day began with a nostalgic breakfast at the Esquire Restaurant—a place steeped in fond memories from the time we lived in Halifax three decades ago. Back then, it was our go-to spot to start the day, and stepping inside now felt like a journey back in time. The charm of the restaurant remains intact, from the welcoming ambiance to the classic breakfast fare that warms the soul. It was more than just a meal—it was a connection to the past, a gentle reminder of how time may pass, but some traditions hold steady.
With our appetites satisfied and our hearts full of memories, we headed to Lawrencetown Beach Provincial Park, a breathtaking stretch along the Atlantic Ocean. The moment we arrived, we were greeted by the sound of crashing waves, their rhythm both powerful and soothing. Lawrencetown Beach is a haven for surfers, who braved the cold waters in their wetsuits to ride the towering swells. The sight was nothing short of mesmerizing—a dance between human skill and nature’s raw energy.
This visit also marked the first photography session of the trip. With my camera in hand, I was drawn to the dynamic beauty of the beach. The waves, the surfers, and the expansive horizon all served as stunning subjects, offering endless opportunities to capture the spirit of the coast. Each click of the shutter felt like a step deeper into the art of storytelling through imagery.
By late afternoon, we returned to Halifax for a meal at Antojo Tacos + Tequila, an energetic and flavorful spot that has become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Specializing in bold, Mexican-inspired cuisine, Antojo delivered a satisfying lunch packed with exciting flavors.
We started with the pork belly taco, which featured crispy, smoky meat balanced perfectly with fresh toppings and a slightly sweet sauce. The fish taco was equally impressive, with lightly battered, flaky fish topped with crunchy slaw and a zesty sauce. For drinks, the Caesar cocktail packed a spicy kick, customizable to personal taste, while the works nachos, served sizzling in a cast-iron skillet, brought layers of gooey cheese, guacamole, and jalapeños together in the perfect shareable dish. To finish, the churros—freshly fried, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and dusted with sugar—ended the meal on a sweet note.
Though the restaurant was busy, sitting at the bar turned out to be a fantastic choice. The bartender’s skill and efficiency made the experience even more enjoyable, contributing to the lively, welcoming vibe of the restaurant.
With good food fueling us, the evening ahead was set for an exciting event—the Allan Doyle concert at Scotiabank Centre. The show was completely sold out, and the energy in the venue was electric. With fantastic floor seats, we had an incredible view of the stage, fully immersed in the music and atmosphere.
Doyle delivered a high-energy performance, blending his solo work with beloved Great Big Sea classics like Ordinary Day, Sea of No Cares, and The Old Black Rum. The crowd was fully engaged, singing along to every word, and the night featured special appearances by Tim Hicks and Fortunate Ones, adding even more excitement to the setlist.
The concert was a perfect way to cap off the day—an unforgettable mix of nostalgia, great music, and the shared joy of live performance.
Day 4 – March 16, 2025
A Day in Halifax: From Breakfast to Reflection
March 16, 2025, was a day filled with connection, creativity, and quiet reflection. It began with a hearty breakfast at the iconic Bluenose II Restaurant in Halifax. Nestled in the heart of downtown, this maritime gem is known for its warm atmosphere and delicious offerings. Sharing a meal with four friends, we enjoyed the restaurant’s signature breakfast dishes, like the Traditional Bluenose Breakfast—eggs, home fries, and toast served with bacon, ham, or sausage. The lively conversation and laughter set the tone for the day ahead.
After breakfast, we embarked on a scenic drive to Peggy’s Cove, a place where nature and history converge. The photo shoot there was a creative journey, capturing the rugged beauty of the coastline, the iconic lighthouse, and the essence of this charming fishing village. (More details on this shoot can be found in a dedicated blog post.)
Returning to the Airbnb, I took a moment to recharge before heading to Camp Hill Cemetery. This historic site, with its weathered gravestones and serene pathways, offered a unique opportunity for photography. The black-and-white shots I captured highlighted the textures and timelessness of the old graveyard, creating a poignant narrative of Halifax’s past.
