Photo Freddy 2024 – Competition 4 – Open Color Theme

Photo Fredericton 2024 - Competition 6 - Open Color Theme

Below are the images that I felt fitted the competition brief. It is always hard to decide which to finally choose but in the end it is a process of elimination and you just decide.

Submission 1 - Total photos in competition - 33
My total Judge Critique and Scores - 23.5
This one finished tied for 5th

Submission 1:

My first submission is from my trip to Bush Gardens Florida of a Flamingo taken in 2013. For me this is of off my all time favorite that I have taken. The exposure and sharpness are good. The colors deep and rich and true to what I saw and the white blending into the  orange is subtle and amazing. The shadow half way down the eye is what originally wanted me to take this photo. Very much looking for the judge critique and this photo. It had very little processing after the fact.

I call this one "Eye Shadow"
New File with Judge Critique
Judge 1 score : 7
Judge 1 Comments:

The eye and feathers of its head on this bird are sharp and well defined. The feathers on the right and lower side of the image are not. The eye as the image is presented is pretty much in the centre of the image. If it were lower, without the extra feathers, its position would be more dynamic; that is in the lower left 1/3 of the image.

Judge 2 Score : 8

Judge 2 Comments:

Lots of colour here…good composition

Judge 3 Score : 8.5
Judge 3 Comments :
A good use of colour and framing the bird so that there are no distractions. A example of where putting the main object in the center of the photo works well.

Submission 2:

My second submission was from a trip to Phoenix Arizona in 2019. This was a work trip but I carved out some time for some photo opportunities. This image was taken at the Desert Botanical Garden in the late park of the day. I loved the vibrant reds and the wispy nature of the filaments. Hence the name. I did try to use the rule of thirds and leave lots of blank to the left to focus the attention on the image.

I call this image "Whispy Red"

Submission 2 - Total Score - Average Score by Judges

Judge 1 score :  6
Judge 1 Comments:
This red flower with its stamens is perfect for this dark green background. A larger Depth of field would help keep more of the stamens as well as other parts in focus

Judge 2 Score : 9
Judge 2 Comments:
Great composition and display of colour

Judge 3 Score :  9.5

Judge 3 Comments :

A truly beautiful photo. Almost perfect. Very well done! The small lighter green leaf at the bottom left ia a little distracting ,but other than that it is outstanding.
