Restaurant Review: Los Toros in Halifax, NS
March 13, 2025
If you’re in Halifax and craving a taste of Spain, Los Toros restaurant and wine bar should be at the top of your list. Nestled in the heart of the city, this spot offers a unique dining experience that beautifully blends tradition with modern touches. We recently visited Los Toros for a mid-afternoon snack, and it was an experience that we won’t soon forget.
The Vibe & History
Los Toros isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a piece of Spain right in Halifax. The restaurant embraces its Spanish roots with a menu that draws inspiration from the northernmost to the southernmost regions of Spain. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed meal with friends or family. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s easy to see why this place has become a beloved part of Halifax’s culinary scene.
A bit of history: The name Los Toros pays homage to the Spanish tradition of bullfighting, but it’s not just about the decor. Tapas, the small plates you’ll find here, have their origins in Spain as well. Legend has it that King Alfonso XIII of Spain, after recovering from an illness, decreed that wine could only be served with food in taverns. This was to ensure that the poor, who couldn’t afford both food and wine, would have something to eat when drinking. Tapas, small and flavorful, were born from this necessity and quickly became a cherished part of Spanish cuisine.

The Food: A Charcuteria Variada to Remember
Our meal started with the Charcuteria Variada, a delightful spread that had something for everyone. The platter featured an impressive variety of meats, cheeses, olives, and other Spanish specialties. Each item on the board was fresh and bursting with flavor. Highlights included a rich, tangy manchego cheese and slices of cured meats that were perfectly seasoned. The olives added a delightful briny contrast, and the figs provided just the right amount of sweetness.
But perhaps the standout element of the entire board was the warm pita bread. Served alongside the charcuterie, it was crisp on the outside yet soft and chewy on the inside—a simple but delicious addition to the meal. Honestly, I would go back just for the bread alone!
The Wine: El Picoleo Red
Accompanying our charcuterie was a glass of El Picoleo Red, a Spanish wine that was the perfect match for our snack. The wine had a deep, rich flavor, with notes of red berries and a subtle spice that complemented the charcuterie beautifully. It wasn’t too heavy but had enough body to stand up to the richness of the cheeses and cured meats. A lovely choice if you’re looking for something bold but not overpowering.
The Overall Experience
With a total cost of $176 for four people, including the charcuterie board, wine, and some additional tapas, Los Toros provides great value for the quality and quantity of food you receive. The service was friendly and knowledgeable, making recommendations that enhanced the overall experience.
Final Thoughts: 7/8 Stars
If I had to rate our experience, I’d give Los Toros a solid 7 out of 8 stars. The flavors were fresh, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. While everything was fantastic, there’s always room for a little improvement, which is why I’m withholding that last star. That being said, I would definitely return to enjoy more of the delicious food and wine, particularly the charcuterie board and that irresistible pita bread.
Los Toros is a gem in Halifax and a must-visit for anyone who loves authentic Spanish cuisine. Whether you’re a seasoned tapas enthusiast or new to this culinary tradition, Los Toros will leave you craving more.
Would I go back? Absolutely!
